Bhubaneswar: Attendance in the classroom has become a challenge. Students can no longer mislead their peers or skip class. Furthermore, teachers are no longer required to call out the students’ names to mark attendance. This is because attendance management has been taken over by Artificial Intelligence (AI). In just 2-3 minutes, the AI collects attendance for the entire class and prepares monthly and yearly records. Odisha is the first state to implement this AI technology in educational institutions, through the Odisha University of Science and Technology (OUSFTIR).

The system was developed with the help of a startup company named ‘Jaki’ (JJZJZ IE), under the university’s Technology Business Incubator, OYUTAR Fin (FINE). The company was founded by Sucit Mishra, and the app was developed inspired by Cab Technologies.
Educational Implementation
The system has been tested in the second and third-year Computer Science, Mechanical, and Biotechnology departments. It will be implemented across all departments starting from July. This automated attendance system is beneficial for both teachers and students. In typical BTech classes, the number of students per class can be around 100 or more. A single class usually lasts for 60 minutes. With such a large number of students, marking attendance manually would take about 30 minutes. This resulted in significant time loss and prevented effective teaching. The new AI system has addressed this issue by reducing the time and effort required for attendance tracking.
How the AI Attendance System Works
Both teachers and students are given a mobile app. After the teacher enters the classroom, they must log in using an OTP on their mobile device. A QR code is generated, valid for only 10 minutes. This QR code is scanned by students within the classroom to mark their attendance. Once scanned, a notification is sent to each student’s mobile device. The students then confirm their attendance by tapping the notification, which updates the attendance records in real-time. The app only works within the classroom boundaries, ensuring students outside the class cannot use it.
Advantages of AI Attendance
The AI system has resulted in time savings, improved accuracy, and eliminated the possibility of errors that were common in manual attendance systems. It has made the attendance process simple, efficient, and highly accurate, which aids in teaching and reduces any confusion or doubts among students.
Professor Ranjan Dash, HOD of the Computer Science Department at OYUTAR, said, “Our AI attendance trial has been successful. Now, even large classes with over 150 students can have their attendance recorded effortlessly. AI has made this process easier, more accurate, and efficient.”
