Debagada, Sept. 23 (UDN): Tension prevailed at the Debagada District Headquarters Hospital after a 22-year-old transgender person died during treatment, with members of the transgender community alleging that the death was caused by a wrong injection.
The deceased was identified as Lagen Bag (22).
According to family members, Lagen was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday morning after developing a fever. He reportedly died later in the evening while undergoing treatment.
Following the death, members of the transgender community gathered at the hospital and demanded compensation of Rs 50 lakh, a postmortem to be conducted outside Debagada district and action against the doctor allegedly responsible for the treatment.
The protesters reportedly remained at the hospital with the body while seeking an explanation over the circumstances surrounding the death.
Police Deployment At Hospital
In view of the situation, Debagada police deployed additional personnel at the hospital to prevent any escalation of tension.
Mahamayi, district president of the transgender community, also reached the hospital and joined the protesters.
Meanwhile, Debagada Tehsildar Karna Mallik visited the hospital and reportedly brought Rs 20,000 from the Red Cross fund for the deceased’s family. He also held discussions with the protesters and appealed for calm.
The exact circumstances leading to Lagen Bag’s death, including the allegation regarding the injection, are yet to be established. Further details are expected after the postmortem and any inquiry into the incident.
