
Kotpad 25th January 2025 Ananta Lal Singh (1 December 1903 – 25 January 1979) was a prominent Indian revolutionary known for his significant role in the Chittagong Armoury Raid of 1930. Born in Chittagong (now in Bangladesh), Singh was deeply influenced by the prevailing nationalist sentiments and became an active member of the revolutionary movement against British colonial rule.
The Chittagong Armoury Raid, led by Surya Sen, aimed to seize British armaments and ignite a nationwide uprising. Singh, along with his compatriots, successfully captured the armoury, marking a significant event in India’s struggle for independence.
Following the raid, Singh evaded capture for a period but eventually surrendered to the authorities in Calcutta to support his fellow revolutionaries who were on trial. He was subsequently sentenced to transportation for life and deported to the Andaman Islands.
After his release, Singh continued his political activities and founded the Revolutionary Communist Council of India, reflecting his evolving ideological stance towards radical communism.
Ananta Singh’s life and contributions have been depicted in Indian cinema, notably in the films “Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey” (2010) and “Chittagong” (2012), where his character was portrayed by actors Maninder Singh and Jaideep Ahlawat, respectively.
Singh passed away on 25 January 1979, leaving behind a legacy of courage and dedication to India’s fight for freedom.
