Nabarangpur: While the educated youth are turning away from farming, a young farmer from Nabarangpur, Sudhanshu Padhi, has become self-reliant by cultivating various profitable exotic fruits on his own farm. He has also become a role model for others.
Initially gaining knowledge from YouTube, Sudhanshu successfully cultivated different foreign fruit varieties. Now, he has achieved a new milestone by growing a rare variety of mango, Miyazaki, which sells for between ₹1 lakh to ₹2 lakh per kilogram in international markets.
Earlier, Sudhanshu had already tasted success growing exotic fruits like dragon fruit, Kesar, Chausa, and Alphonso mangoes. Currently, he has gained attention for cultivating the rare and expensive Miyazaki mango. Two years ago, he planted the saplings on his farm after buying each for ₹2100 from a nursery in July 2023. He used organic fertilizers such as cow dung, neem, and compost. Within two years, the trees have started bearing fruit.
The trees are only 6 to 7 feet tall and have already yielded mangoes. Each mango weighs between half a kilogram to one kilogram. With the help of digital media, he learned the special care required for such rare varieties. He attributes his success to the hard work of his farm workers and careful attention to the plants.
Sudhanshu has expressed joy and satisfaction with the outcome. His workers are also happy to see the results of their efforts and are now focused on the care and protection of these valuable mango trees. For the first time in a predominantly agrarian district like Nabarangpur, such rare mango cultivation and production have been successfully achieved.
In addition to Miyazaki, Sudhanshu continues to cultivate Kesar, Chausa, Alphonso, and guavas on his farm. He proudly states that successfully growing Miyazaki mangoes, even experimentally, is a matter of great honor for him.
The Miyazaki mango is known for its bright reddish-purple color and high market demand globally. According to available information, Sudhanshu’s farm is located in Dengatotaguda village under Nandahandi block in Nabarangpur district. His farm is now beautifully adorned with a variety of exotic fruit trees, including the recently fruiting Miyazaki mangoes.
With support from the district horticulture department, a drip irrigation system has been installed on his farm, for which he received a 60% subsidy from the government. The drip system ensures that water, along with fertilizers and nutrients, is delivered to the trees at regular intervals, ensuring their proper nourishment and growth. This has further helped in the successful cultivation and care of the rare Miyazaki mangoes on the soil of Nabarangpur.
