Nabarangpur MLA Writes to Higher Education Minister Seeking Government Recognition for Nabarangpur College

Nabarangpur, May 22: Nabarangpur MLA and Chairman of the District Planning Committee, Gaurishankar Majhi, has written a letter to the State Higher Education Minister Surjyabanshi Suraj, requesting that the oldest college in Nabarangpur district—Nabarangpur College—be either declared a government college, upgraded to university status, or granted autonomous college status.

Established in 1971, Nabarangpur College has been providing higher education for more than five decades. It is the oldest and one of the most prominent colleges in the district.

There have been continuous demands from local residents to bring this institution under government control by declaring it a government college. At present, thousands of students are studying in the institution, many of whom belong to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and economically weaker sections of society. These students are often unable to afford donations or high fees.

The financial condition of the college is also not strong. Many staff members receive very low salaries, which are paid from donations collected from students.

Considering the broader interest of the people of Nabarangpur district, especially the student community, the MLA has stated that the time has come to declare the college a government institution. Alternatively, he has suggested upgrading it to university status or granting it autonomous college status.

He further mentioned in the letter that the college already meets all required standards for such recognition. Therefore, he has urged the minister to take swift action on the matter.
