Konark At the shrine of Goddess Bhagabati, the presiding deity of Konark under Gop Block, members of the Konark Kinnar Sangha (Transgender Association) observed the Savitri Brata ritual. On this sacred day, the kinnars (transgender individuals) worshipped the Goddess, praying for the long life and good health of their gurus and observed the brata (vow) with devotion.
The Savitri Brata was celebrated in a deeply devotional atmosphere by the Konark Kinnar Sangha. Traditionally, married Hindu women observe Savitri Brata, praying for the longevity and well-being of their husbands and families. Similarly, the kinnars performed the ritual, praying for the long life of their gurus.
Kinnars, often marginalized by society and separated from their biological families, find new families within their community. The one who accepts and shelters them becomes their guru. Hence, the kinnars observed the brata with great fervor, offering prayers for their gurus’ welfare.
Like married women, they observed fasting and adorned themselves with sindoor (vermilion), bangles, fruits, and other offerings, presenting them to the Goddess with deep devotion. They also prayed not only for their guru’s well-being but also for spiritual liberation from their current birth.
Leading the ceremony was Deepa Kinnar, head of the Konark Kinnar Sangha, accompanied by fellow members Shanti, Sukanti, Sandhya, Kuni, Shraddha, Tulasi, Lakshmi, Chinu, Ganga, Kajal, and Shivani. Together, they worshipped at the temple and observed the ritual with dedication.
