Bhubaneswar,  Aug 3 [UDN}:In a significant boost to India’s sports sector, the Union Cabinet has approved a major expansion of the Khelo India Scheme. Under this ambitious decision, the Central Government will invest ₹29,000 crore in the programme over the next five years to strengthen the country’s sporting ecosystem and nurture athletic talent from the grassroots to the international level.
The enhanced funding is aimed at developing world-class sports infrastructure, identifying and training promising athletes at an early age, improving coaching facilities, supporting sports science and technology, and creating more opportunities for young sportspersons across the country. The scheme will continue to focus on encouraging greater participation in sports among children and youth while promoting a culture of fitness and excellence.
The government’s decision reflects its long-term commitment to transforming India into a global sporting powerhouse by providing sustained financial support, modern facilities, and comprehensive training programmes. The expanded Khelo India initiative is expected to benefit thousands of athletes, educational institutions, sports academies, and local communities, ultimately contributing to India’s improved performance in international sporting events such as the Olympics, Asian Games, and Commonwealth Games.
