Jeypore, April 16: Traffic congestion at Gandhi Chhak in Jeypore is set to improve soon. The municipal authorities have planned to install solar-powered digital traffic signal lights at the junction. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) has already been prepared, and further steps will be taken after administrative approval, informed Municipal Chairman Narendra Kumar Mahanti.
He stated that Jeypore is the main commercial hub of the undivided Koraput region. Gandhi Chhak is a crucial junction where five roads converge, including NH-26, NH-326, the Kolab Canal bypass road, and the road leading to Welcome Chhak. Due to the intersection of two national highways at one point, there is constant movement of heavy vehicles.
In addition, passengers traveling to various places in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Koraput, and Malkangiri districts often wait for buses at this junction. Heavy vehicle drivers heading towards Raipur, Jagdalpur, Nabarangpur, and Kalahandi largely depend on the Kolab Canal bypass road. To avoid city congestion, cars, light vehicles, and ambulances also frequently use this route.
The bypass road has numerous garages, and the stretch between Gandhi Chhak and the main traffic junction houses several government and private offices, large showrooms, banks, and business establishments. A similar situation exists along MG Road and the road from Gandhi Chhak to Hatpada.
With the increasing population and rising number of vehicles in the city, traffic management has become more challenging. Currently, town police manually control traffic at this important junction, but congestion remains a persistent issue, and accidents occasionally occur.
Considering this, a decision has been taken to install traffic signal lights at the junction. A council meeting held on March 6 discussed the issue, and the proposal was unanimously approved.
The DPR has been sent for administrative approval. Once approved, the tender process will be completed, and work will begin.
Additionally, an Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) will be established to strengthen law enforcement and improve traffic management in the city.
