Bhubaneswar, May 06: The parliamentary board of the Bharatiya Janata Party has appointed Union Home Minister Amit Shah as the central observer for the election of the BJP Legislative Party leader in West Bengal. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has been appointed as the co-observer.
The All India Trinamool Congress government led by Mamata Banerjee has been defeated in West Bengal, with BJP securing a massive victory. The majority mark in the assembly is 147 seats, while BJP has won 206 seats. TMC, which was in power for 15 years, has secured 80 seats. Congress and Left parties have won 2 seats each, while others have won 2 seats.
Mamata Banerjee herself lost the election from Bhabanipur to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari by a margin of over 15,000 votes.
As BJP is set to form the government in Bengal for the first time, discussions are ongoing about who will become the Chief Minister. The names in the race include Suvendu Adhikari, Dilip Ghosh, Samik Bhattacharya, Roopa Ganguly, and Agnimitra Paul.
Preparations for the swearing-in ceremony have already begun. Since BJP will be forming the government in Bengal for the first time, special focus is being given to the state’s traditions. The oath-taking ceremony will be held on May 9, the birth anniversary of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore.
Earlier, during the final rally of the election campaign, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had expressed confidence that BJP would form the government in the state and had hinted that the swearing-in could take place on Tagore Jayanti.
