Nabarangpur: Umarakot, the second-largest city and the economic hub of Nabarangpur district, has limited recreational spaces for residents. Apart from a handful of parks, there are hardly any places where people can relax or spend quality time with their families. To address this issue, the then MLA and current Odisha School and Mass Education Minister, Nityananda Gond, proposed developing a smart park on the Dongariguda hill in the city’s subdivision. Though the project was delayed due to various reasons, it is now being realized under the name Dongariguda Smart Park.
The construction work has started after the MLA contributed ₹30 lakh from his personal funds. A Detailed Project Report (DPR) worth approximately ₹6 crore has been prepared, and a master plan has been approved, paving the way for the project’s execution. In the coming days, Umarakot residents will enjoy a modern smart park, and there is a growing excitement among locals.
Transformation of Dongariguda Hill into a Smart Park
Dongariguda Hill, located along State Highway 39 at the entrance of Umarakot, was once under the control of illegal mining mafias. The hill, originally spanning 7-8 acres, has been reduced to just 5 acres due to encroachments. Now, the government is transforming this land into a smart park, and the initial phase of construction is progressing rapidly. The excitement among the city’s residents is evident as the long-awaited project takes shape.
Features of the Smart Park
In the first phase, an entrance gate, watchtower, and café will be built at a cost of ₹30 lakh. A DPR worth ₹11 crore has been submitted, and discussions have been held with the Urban Development and Tourism Department. Once completed, the park will enhance Umarakot’s beauty and serve as a recreational hub for locals. Additionally, it is expected to create job opportunities for young people in the area.
Expressing his views, Minister Nityananda Gond stated that this smart park will not only be a source of entertainment for the people but also boost tourism and employment. Residents of Umarakot have thanked the minister for his efforts in making this project a reality.
