New Delhi, 12th Nov 2025:  In India, there will soon be only one type of police uniform. Police officers in different states will no longer wear different kinds of uniforms. The central government is planning to implement a “One Nation – One Police Uniform” scheme very soon. The Ministry of Home Affairs has recently sent letters regarding this to 16 states and union territories, including Odisha. These letters ask the states to provide details about the uniforms and allowances currently being used by their police officers by November 4.

Center Seeks Information from 16 States Including Odisha

The states included are Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Goa, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Kerala, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Odisha, Sikkim, Telangana, Tripura, Uttarakhand, and West Bengal. These states have been asked to provide detailed information about the standards, design, and cost of police uniforms. This information is being sought in two stages: the first stage concerns information from constables up to DSPs, and the second stage concerns the uniforms of police DGs. The letters have been sent from the Ministry of Home Affairs. Later, the information will also be provided by the police DGs from the control rooms to the respective state police headquarters.

The Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPRD) prepares the design of police uniforms. This organization recommends the necessary fabric, color, insignia, and cost of the uniforms. Currently, the central government wants to keep the fabric, color, and design of the police uniform the same across the country, while still preserving the identity of individual states by using their respective state insignias on the uniform.

In October 2022, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had proposed the idea of a “One Nation – One Police Uniform” during a brainstorming session with state home ministers.
