Jeypore: Shravani Energy Private Limited is undertaking a major project in Odisha, aimed at producing electricity using water, land, and forest resources. The company plans to sell electricity to Odisha, generating substantial revenue in the process. However, the project has faced concerns regarding environmental impact and land acquisition, particularly regarding transmission lines. The project involves the construction of a 35 km transmission line, which is expected to pass through forest and revenue department lands.
Despite this, the company claims that it has not affected any forest or revenue department land and has adhered to environmental policies. Environmental activists, however, are calling for higher-level investigations and firm action against the company, alleging illegal land acquisition and potential harm to local ecosystems.
The transmission line will extend from the Dumajhodi area near Kotpad Block, crossing over several rivers and forests. The project will include high-power transmission poles to connect the grid. However, environmental experts question the validity of the company’s claims, particularly regarding the minimal impact of just four poles on forest land.
Additionally, there are concerns regarding the construction of dams and water diversion for the project, which could lead to the drying up of local waterfalls and other water bodies. Shravani Energy has stated that it is building canals to divert water to its project site, but reports indicate that no waterfalls or tourist sites are present in the lower region of the project area, which has surprised local communities.
The Odisha government has been informed of the environmental concerns, and an investigation has been ordered. However, locals remain skeptical about the company’s practices and its compliance with regulations.
