Puri, July 8 (UDN): An unusual sight greeted visitors at Astaranga beach in Odisha’s Puri district after a massive iron navigation buoy washed ashore following turbulent sea conditions in the Bay of Bengal.

The heavy marine structure reportedly broke free from its anchorage due to strong waves triggered by a low-pressure system over the sea and drifted towards the coastline.

The buoy, equipped with a beacon light, is used to guide ships and fishing trawlers along designated routes and ensure safer navigation, especially during night hours. After being swept ashore, it was found partially buried in the sand along the beach.

The rare incident attracted a large number of local residents and tourists, who gathered at Astaranga beach to witness the giant structure lying on the shore.

Local residents said several such navigation buoys had been installed in the sea by the Marine Fisheries Department to assist vessels. They urged authorities to remove the buoy from the beach and relocate it to a safe place to prevent any possible inconvenience or safety concerns.

Authorities are expected to inspect the structure and take necessary steps for its recovery and restoration of normal navigation arrangements in the area.
