Lucknow, May 08: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday inaugurated the 594-km-long Ganga Expressway in Hardoi, Uttar Pradesh.
With this mega infrastructure project, travel time from Meerut to Prayagraj will be reduced to just 5–6 hours. Earlier, it used to take nearly twice as long. Addressing a public rally on the occasion, the Prime Minister said that just as Mother Ganga has been the lifeline of Uttar Pradesh for thousands of years, this expressway will also become a new lifeline for the state’s development.
He added that this high-speed corridor will improve connectivity in the state and boost industrial development as well as the marketing of agricultural products. He also stated that the expressway will be connected to Haridwar in the future.
On the political front, the Prime Minister also spoke about the West Bengal Assembly elections, claiming signs of record voter turnout in the second phase. He said people are coming out to vote in large numbers without fear, which reflects the strengthening of democracy.
He expressed confidence that the BJP would achieve a historic victory in the elections of five states to be declared on May 4.
During the public meeting, Modi also criticized the Samajwadi Party and the Congress for opposing the constitutional amendment bill related to women’s reservation. He said that if the bill had been passed, women would have received reservation in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies starting from the 2029 elections. However, SP and Congress voted against it, which he said shows their inability to rise above dynastic and caste politics. He urged people to remain cautious.
Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister held a 14-km roadshow in Varanasi and visited the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, where he offered prayers inside the sanctum sanctorum for about 20 minutes.
