Manipur: The Government of India has imposed President’s Rule in Manipur following the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on February 9, 2025. This decision comes amid ongoing ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities, which has resulted in over 250 deaths and displaced thousands since 2023.
The imposition of President’s Rule means that the state will be directly governed by the central government through the federally-appointed governor, Ajay Kumar Bhalla. This action was taken after President Droupadi Murmu received a report from the Governor of Manipur and determined that the state’s government could not function according to constitutional provisions.
N. Biren Singh, a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and a leader from the Meitei community, resigned amid mounting pressure from both opposition parties and allies within his own party due to his handling of the crisis. The central government has partly attributed the violence to an influx of refugees from neighboring Myanmar.
