Cuttack: In the fiscal year 2021-22, Odisha’s per capita electricity consumption reached 2,264 kilowatt-hours (kWh), positioning it third among Indian states, following Goa and Punjab. This figure represents a significant increase from 1,559 kWh three years prior, marking a rise of approximately 31.13 percent
In contrast, India’s national per capita electricity consumption for the same period was 1,255 kWh. This indicates that Odisha’s per capita consumption is notably higher than the national average.
The substantial growth in Odisha’s electricity consumption can be attributed to rapid industrialization, urbanization, and an overall increase in demand. The state’s proactive measures, including the privatization of the power distribution sector in partnership with Tata Power since 2020, have significantly improved electricity distribution and accessibility. This collaboration has resulted in over 1 million new connections across both urban and rural regions of Odisha.
Despite the increased demand, Odisha maintains a robust electricity production capacity. In the fiscal year 2023-24, the state’s installed capacity reached 8,844.8 megawatts (MW), reflecting a growth of nearly 9 percent compared to the previous year. This capacity is sourced from thermal power (56percent), hydroelectric power (27percent), and renewable energy sources (17percent), with solar energy contributing the largest share among renewables at 70percent
