Bhubaneswar, Sept. 18 (UDN): In a move aimed at promoting a healthier workplace and strengthening public health initiatives, the Odisha Government has declared the entire Lok Seva Bhavan premises a Tobacco-Free Zone, imposing a complete ban on smoking, tobacco consumption and tobacco spitting within the government complex.
The Health and Family Welfare Department has issued an official notification making the restrictions effective across the premises. Officials said violations of the new rules will attract action under the relevant legal provisions.
Strict ban within government premises
Under the notification, employees, visitors and officials are prohibited from smoking, chewing tobacco or spitting tobacco anywhere inside the Lok Seva Bhavan campus. The government said the measure is intended to create a cleaner and healthier working environment while reinforcing existing tobacco-control efforts.
Part of wider public health campaign
Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Mukesh Mahaling said the decision aligns with the objectives of the Swachh Bharat, Swastha Bharat and Nasha Mukta Bharat campaigns.
He said the initiative reflects the state’s commitment to discouraging tobacco use, promoting healthier lifestyles and setting a positive example through government workplaces.
Tobacco remains a major health concern
The department noted that tobacco use continues to be a leading contributor to non-communicable diseases, including cancer, heart disease and lung ailments. It also highlighted that tobacco-related illnesses claim around 1.3 million lives annually in India, underscoring the need for stronger preventive measures.
Officials said the declaration of Lok Seva Bhavan as a tobacco-free zone marks another step in Odisha’s broader efforts to improve public health and encourage tobacco-free environments across government institutions.
