Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared January 16 as National Startup Day in 2021. Since then, various programs and events have been organized by government and non-government organizations to appreciate and promote India’s startup ecosystem.
National Startup Day: Date
National Startup Day is observed on January 16. The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) and the Ministry of Commerce and Industry have marked the entire week from January 10 to January 16 as National Startup Week.

Theme for National Startup Day 2024
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry, along with DPIIT, organized the Startup India Innovation Week in 2024. On January 11, 2024, DPIIT Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh introduced the week-long celebration with the theme: “Startups Unlocking Infinite Potential.” This event brought together entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, innovators, and startup enthusiasts.
History of National Startup Day
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the establishment of National Startup Day on January 15, 2022. The first celebration took place that same year. During a video conference with aspiring business owners, the Prime Minister praised the growth of startups in recent years.
Significance of National Startup Day
National Startup Day is celebrated to honor the achievements of the startup community in India. It provides a platform for startup business owners to discuss their innovations and contributions to the economy.
Additionally, it aims to highlight the importance of startup initiatives and position them as representatives of society at large. This initiative seeks to encourage youth to adopt entrepreneurship as a primary career choice.
National Startup Day 2025 Overview
Observed on January 16, National Startup Day acknowledges India’s thriving startup ecosystem. In 2025, the celebrations will expand as part of “Udyam Utsav 2025” with workshops, fundraising platforms, networking events, and discussions.
Startup Day Celebrations
To mark National Startup Day 2025, the Ministry of Education (MoE) is organizing “Udyam Utsav-2025” in 14 cities. Interested students and faculty startups, as well as those incubated in academic institutions registered on ‘yukti.mic.gov.in,’ are invited to participate. Similar events are being hosted by various other organizations.
India’s Startup Ecosystem
India ranks third globally in terms of startup ecosystems, with over 157,066 startups supported by the government. Key factors contributing to this success include:
Government Support: Initiatives like Startup India provide tax benefits and financing to help startups grow.
Diverse Sectors: Startups in fintech, edtech, health-tech, and e-commerce leverage cutting-edge technologies like AI and blockchain to solve problems.
Job Creation: Startups have created over 1.6 million jobs, boosting the economy.
Global Expansion: Indian startups are reaching international markets, showcasing India’s global influence.
Moreover, nearly half of Indian startups have at least one female director, highlighting the growing role of women in driving innovation.
