Bhubaneswar, Sept. 8 (UDN): The rescue of five unusual primate-like animals from the Bichitrapur forest in Odisha’s Balasore district has sparked widespread curiosity, with forest officials launching an investigation to determine their species and how they reached the area.

The animals, which locals initially described as resembling orangutans, were spotted in the forest under Bhograi block on Tuesday. However, officials have not yet confirmed their identity.
Forest officials rescue all five
According to sources, local residents first noticed the animals moving through the trees, attracting a large crowd. Many people recorded videos and photographs before alerting the Forest Department.
A team of forest officials reached the spot, safely rescued all five animals and shifted them to a veterinary facility for medical examination and further assessment.
Species yet to be identified
Authorities said the animals are undergoing examination to establish their exact species and assess their health.
The case has drawn attention because orangutans are not native to India, making the reported sighting unusual. Officials are therefore treating the matter as an investigation rather than confirming the animals’ identity based on their appearance.
Probe into their origin
Forest officials are also trying to determine how the animals ended up in the Bichitrapur forest.
Investigators are examining whether they may have escaped from captivity, been abandoned after being transported from another location, or belong to another primate species with similar physical features.
The rescued animals will remain under the Forest Department’s care while veterinary experts and wildlife officials continue efforts to establish their identity and trace their origin.
