Bhubaneswar: The All India Electricity Consumers Association staged a protest on Tuesday at Jantar Mantar, in front of the Parliament building, demanding the withdrawal of the Electricity (Amendment) Bill 2022 and opposing the privatization of electricity services, the implementation of prepaid smart meters, the introduction of Time-of-Day tariff, and the increase in electricity charges.

Hundreds of electricity consumers from Odisha participated in the protest. The protesters accused the BJP government of exploiting consumers to serve the interests of private electricity company Tata Power. They strongly opposed the proposal to install prepaid smart meters and the 91-paise per unit hike in electricity charges.

Odisha state convenor of the All India Electricity Consumers Association, Jayasen Meher, condemned the double-engine BJP government for taking such anti-people measures. The protesters demanded that the central BJP government intervene immediately and take steps to stop the implementation of prepaid smart meters and electricity tariff hikes.
