Bhubaneswar: Following the announcement of Naveen Patnaik as the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) President for the ninth time, party leaders expressed great enthusiasm. Soon after the declaration, a wave of greetings poured in. Puri MLA Sunil Mohanty and Rajya Sabha MP Subhashish Khuntia honored him with traditional gifts like handwoven Patta cloth.
Some offered flowers, others presented Pattachitra paintings or ceremonial shawls as part of the welcome. The BJD headquarters, Shankha Bhavan, resonated with the sound of conch shells, drums, and fireworks.
On this occasion, Deputy Leader of the Opposition Prasanna Acharya stated that Naveen Patnaik was unanimously elected as BJD President. “After ruling for 24 years, we are now taking on the role of the opposition. It will be a challenge, but we are ready. Anyone who acts against the interests of Odisha will be opposed,” he said. He also emphasized the importance of giving more opportunities to the younger generation within the party.
Similarly, senior BJD MLA and Chief Whip of the Opposition Pramila Mallick said that BJD is preparing for a new beginning and Naveen’s acceptance and popularity are increasing.
“The Fight Will Be Decisive” – Arun Sahoo
Senior MLA and former minister Dr. Arun Sahoo remarked that under Naveen’s continued leadership, the BJD will move forward with a new team. “This time, the battle will be decisive,” he said, criticizing the central “double engine” government for making lofty promises but delivering “double betrayal.” He added that the state government’s promises remain unfulfilled, and the coming days will witness an intensified political fight.
Former MP and BJD leader Pradeep Majhi added that the party will operate with a new equation. Many new faces will join the BJD from various fields, indicating a broadened and more inclusive party structure moving forward.
