Kharagpur–Amaravati Greenfield Expressway: 522-Km Stretch to Pass Through Odisha, Strengthening Interstate Road Connectivity

Kharagpur,Sept 22 [UDN}: The proposed Kharagpur–Amaravati Greenfield Expressway is set to emerge as a major inter-state road corridor connecting Kharagpur in West Bengal with Amaravati in Andhra Pradesh. The proposed high-speed corridor is expected to have an overall length of around 1,107 km, passing through West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh.
The project is estimated to involve an investment of around ₹75,629 crore. The proposed expressway is planned as a four- to six-lane high-speed corridor, with approximately 90 metres of Right of Way (ROW) and a design speed of around 100–120 kmph.
A major objective of the corridor is to provide an alternative high-capacity route to the existing NH-16 Kolkata–Chennai corridor, thereby helping reduce traffic congestion and improving connectivity between eastern and southern India. According to the details provided, the project could also reduce travel time between Kolkata and Amaravati by around 4–5 hours.
Odisha Section: 522 km Across Nine Districts
A substantial 522-km stretch of the proposed expressway is planned within Odisha, passing through nine districts:
Mayurbhanj – 86 km
Keonjhar – 86 km
Dhenkanal – 88 km
Cuttack – 21 km
Nayagarh – 38 km
Ganjam – 97 km
Gajapati – 36 km
Rayagada – 53 km
Koraput – 17 km
The Odisha portion would therefore connect northern, central and southern parts of the state through a new high-speed road network. The corridor is also expected to strengthen access to mineral-rich regions, industrial centres and important economic zones.
The proposed alignment would provide a new inter-state transportation link between eastern India and Andhra Pradesh, potentially supporting the movement of passengers, industrial goods, agricultural produce and mineral resources while improving connectivity between several districts that are not directly served by major expressway corridors.
Alignment and Project Approvals
As per the information provided, the alignment has received approval from the Central Government, while the project is targeting final financial and construction approvals by March 2027.
Once implemented, the Kharagpur–Amaravati Greenfield Expressway is envisaged as an important addition to India’s expanding greenfield highway network, offering a high-speed alternative to existing routes and strengthening east–south inter-state connectivity.
The 522-km Odisha stretch, in particular, would make the state a major link in this proposed 1,107-km corridor, connecting nine districts from Mayurbhanj in the north to Koraput in the south.
