Honoring Sabita Ambedkar on Her Birth Anniversary: A Legacy of Social Justice and Advocacy

Kotpad  27th January 2025  Sabita Ambedkar, also known as Dr. Sharada Kabir, was the second wife of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution and a leading social reformer. Born in 1909 in Dadar, Mumbai, Sabita belonged to a Brahmin family and was a doctor by profession. She met Dr. Ambedkar when he was battling health issues, and her medical care and support played a crucial role in his recovery.

Their marriage in 1948 was controversial due to their different castes, as Dr. Ambedkar was a Dalit, and Sabita was a Brahmin. However, their union highlighted Dr. Ambedkar’s commitment to breaking social barriers and promoting equality. She stood by him during his final years, providing emotional and physical support as he worked tirelessly on social reforms, including the promotion of Buddhism in India.

Sabita converted to Buddhism along with Dr. Ambedkar and thousands of his followers in 1956. After his death later that year, she dedicated herself to preserving his legacy and contributing to the Dalit movement. Sabita Ambedkar remains a symbol of devotion, courage, and commitment to social justice.
