Government Announces 42-Day Leave for Employees Who Donate Organs

New Delhi, : The Central Government has introduced a provision allowing government employees to avail up to 42 days of special leave if they donate an organ. Union Minister Jitendra Singh informed the Lok Sabha about this on Wednesday.

With the approval of a government doctor, any government employee undergoing surgery for organ donation can avail this leave, starting from the day of hospital admission. The leave period is capped at 42 days. The surgery must be scheduled at least one week in advance, unless it’s an emergency, the Minister added.

This provision was implemented in 2023 with the aim of encouraging more people to participate in organ donation.

It’s worth noting that under the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS), government employees and their families are entitled to affordable medical treatment, medicines, and hospitalization. These CGHS benefits continue even after retirement. Additionally, female employees are granted six months of maternity leave, while male employees receive 15 days of paternity leave.
