July 3 (UDN): The Government of Odisha has expanded the GARIMA initiative to further enhance safety, dignity, and welfare measures for core sanitation workers across the state, focusing on mechanisation and improved social protection.
The programme aims to eliminate hazardous manual cleaning practices by deploying mechanised sewer and septic tank cleaning systems, along with providing comprehensive safety equipment such as helmets, gloves, masks, protective eyewear, and durable footwear to workers.
Under the initiative, sanitation workers are also being covered through a range of welfare measures, including hazard allowances, life and accident insurance, regular health check-ups, identity cards, access to food security schemes, and housing support under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana–Urban (PMAY-U). Dedicated Garima Halls have been established across urban local bodies to provide rest and sanitation facilities.
According to the government, more than 9,000 core sanitation workers are currently covered under the GARIMA ecosystem, which continues to expand to improve working conditions and ensure greater social security.
Officials stated that mechanisation-driven reforms are significantly reducing occupational risks while improving service efficiency and enhancing recognition of sanitation workers as skilled professionals.
The state will also host the 2nd National GARIMA Conclave in Bhubaneswar on 22–23 August 2026, bringing together policymakers, experts, and stakeholders from across the country to discuss best practices and strengthen inclusive sanitation reforms.
