From Mourning to Mockery: Malkangiri Crematorium Turns Into Selfie Spot

Malkangiri: The word crematorium (Shmashan) often evokes fear and dread. Traditionally, people avoid going near cremation grounds, and if such a site lies along a road, passersby feel uneasy, especially at night. It is believed that spirits linger near crematoriums, and strange sounds—like howling or whispers—often reinforce this belief, creating fear in the minds of people.

However, one such crematorium in Malkangiri district headquarters has now undergone a remarkable transformation and is being hailed as a model crematorium. The once neglected and garbage-strewn site has now become so aesthetically pleasing that no one would believe it’s a cremation ground—it now looks like a beautiful garden.

People passing by the road no longer feel fear near the site. In fact, they are drawn in to admire the beauty of the place—lush gardens, a grand statue of Lord Shiva, and artistic landscaping. Visitors even stop to take selfies.

Previously, people hesitated to even step inside the crematorium unless it was for the cremation of a family member. Non-family members would usually remain outside during the ritual. But now, thanks to this transformation, the crematorium resembles a peaceful park.

The Malkangiri Municipality, spending around ₹9.30 crore, has redeveloped the old cremation ground into a model crematorium. At the entrance stands a 15-foot statue of Lord Shiva, with a beautifully crafted Shivling in front. The entire area is now surrounded by vibrant flower gardens, seating areas, and even a resting hall for mourners.

At night, the site glows with multicolored lighting, creating a peaceful and almost festive atmosphere. Now, people no longer fear visiting the crematorium even after dark—they come willingly, take photos, and admire the transformation.

Municipality Chairman Manoj Kumar Barik said that this was his dream project—to turn the old, dilapidated crematorium into a model place of dignity and peace. This dream has now been fulfilled.

Additionally, efforts are underway to revive the Bali Sagar Pond in Malkangiri. Barik shared that this, too, is a part of his vision, and the area surrounding the pond will soon be developed into a full-fledged garden park in the days to come.
