Capital Hospital-PGIIMER Achieves Milestone with Minimally Invasive Pancreatitis Surgery

Bhubaneswar: A complex pancreatitis surgery was successfully performed without opening the abdomen at Capital Hospital–PGIIMER’s Gastro Surgery and Oncology department. The intricate operation was conducted laparoscopically over 12 hours. The patient is currently in stable condition.

Professor Dr. Srikant Patra, who led the surgery, is receiving wide acclaim for this achievement.

12-Hour Laparoscopic Surgery

The surgery was performed under the leadership of Professor Srikant Patra and his dedicated team. Pancreatic cancer surgery is considered one of the most complicated abdominal operations. Last Saturday, after 12 continuous hours of effort, the team successfully completed the surgery using laparoscopy.

Dr. Patra was supported by Associate Professor Dr. Priyambada Sahu, anesthesiologist Dr. Shriram Das, Dr. B.V. Ravikumar, and the entire OT team. The surgery began at 9 AM and concluded at 10 PM.

Senior medical support came from Surgical Department HOD Dr. Sushil Pattnaik, Anesthesia HOD Dr. Nihar Senapati, and former PGIIMER Director Professor Nibedita Pani, among others.

The patient, 50-year-old Gagan Lenka from Naugaon in Jagatsinghpur district, had been suffering from abdominal pain for some time and was diagnosed with chronic pancreatitis. Later, he developed pancreatic cancer. Mr. Lenka approached Professor Patra for treatment, who after thorough examination, scheduled laparoscopic surgery.

Laparoscopy First Introduced at Capital Hospital in 2022

Professor Patra stated that the first open abdominal surgery was done at Capital Hospital in September 2022. Since then, many complex and risky operations requiring 25–30 cm abdominal incisions were performed. These surgeries caused significant pain, longer recovery times, and life-threatening complications.

However, last Saturday marked the first successful laparoscopic surgery of such complexity at the hospital. Dr. Patra added that if the state government introduces robotic surgery facilities, major surgeries can be performed much more easily and in less time.
