Bhubaneswar, Apr 14 (BNP): In a significant boost to Odisha’s culinary heritage, the iconic Nayagarh Chhenapoda is likely to secure the coveted Geographical Indication (GI) tag in the near future.
Officials said the application process is in an advanced stage, raising strong expectations for formal recognition of the signature sweet from Nayagarh. Celebrated for its distinctive caramelised flavour and traditional baking technique, Chhenapoda remains a cornerstone of Odisha’s rich culinary tradition.
The GI tag is expected to safeguard the product’s authenticity, curb misuse of its name, and significantly enhance its market potential both within India and abroad. It is also likely to deliver a substantial economic boost to local sweet makers and small-scale enterprises engaged in its production.
Stakeholders believe the recognition will not only preserve the legacy of this traditional delicacy but also elevate Odisha’s indigenous cuisine on the global stage.
