Concern Mounts at Hirakud Dam as Floodwater Is Released Through 22 Gates, Raising Fears of a Major Flood Along the Mahanadi River

Bhubaneswar, Aug 3 [UDN}:  Concern over the flood situation in Odisha has intensified as the authorities at the Hirakud Dam have significantly increased the release of excess floodwater. At present, water is being discharged through 22 sluice gates of the dam to regulate the rising reservoir level following continuous heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas of the Mahanadi River basin. The large-scale release of water has raised serious fears of a major flood downstream, with the Mahanadi River expected to witness a sharp rise in water levels over the coming hours and days.
The increased discharge from Hirakud Dam is likely to affect several low-lying districts situated along the Mahanadi River, prompting the state administration to remain on high alert. District authorities, disaster management teams, and emergency response agencies have been instructed to closely monitor the river’s water level and take all necessary precautionary measures to safeguard lives and property.
Residents living in vulnerable riverside villages and flood-prone areas have been advised to stay alert, avoid venturing near the riverbanks, and cooperate with local authorities in case evacuation becomes necessary. The Odisha government is continuously reviewing the evolving flood situation, while rescue teams, including ODRAF, NDRF, and Fire Services personnel, remain prepared for any emergency.
Officials have urged the public not to panic but to rely only on official weather and flood advisories. As heavy inflows continue into the Hirakud reservoir, authorities are maintaining regulated releases to ensure the structural safety of the dam while minimizing downstream flood risks. However, with 22 gates currently open, the possibility of a significant flood in the Mahanadi River system remains a major concern, and people in downstream districts are being urged to remain extremely cautious until the situation improves.
