Umerkote: Padman Mali, a farmer from the village of B.S. Pada under Umerkote police station in Nabarangpur district, is cultivating colorful cauliflowers. His fields are vibrant with purple and yellow cabbages, resembling a garden full of blooming flowers. Inspired by YouTube, Padman has grown these colorful cabbages on approximately one and a half acres of land.
Curious crowds are gathering at Padman’s farm to witness this unique cultivation. Compared to the traditional white cabbage, these colorful cauliflowers are attracting more attention in the market. People are fascinated by the vibrant colors, but they are also purchasing them after understanding their nutritional benefits.
According to reports, Padman first learned about this farming technique through YouTube. He sourced the seeds with the help of local traders. While people are initially surprised to see such colorful cabbages, they are buying them due to their health benefits. These cabbages are heavier than regular white ones and take around 70 to 75 days to mature. Rich in vitamins, particularly vitamin K and C, they are highly nutritious and beneficial for pregnant women, as stated by horticulture officer Saroj Senapati.
Padman mentioned that he frequently consumes these fresh cauliflowers as his home is close to his farm. He has invested around 40,000 to 50,000 rupees in this cultivation and expects a profit of nearly 1.5 lakh rupees. Currently, these cabbages are being sold in the market for 50 to 60 rupees per kilogram. Padman is hopeful that this will become a profitable business in the future and is encouraging other farmers to adopt colorful cauliflower farming as well.
Previously, no one in the district had attempted such cultivation, and the demand in the market is steadily increasing. Inspired by Padman’s success, other farmers have also expressed interest in growing these vibrant vegetables.
