Nabarangpur, 24th Oct 2025: On the occasion of ‘World White Cane Day’, a special program was organized today at the Vidyarthi College in Nabarangpur by the district branch of Saksham.
During the event, Mr. Sujit Rath, District President of Saksham, spoke about the importance of the white cane, emphasizing that it symbolizes independence and mobility for visually impaired individuals. He described the white cane as the walking companion of the blind and a vital tool that promotes self-reliance.
Mr. Jagannath Mohapatra, Joint Secretary of Saksham, highlighted that the organization works to celebrate the achievements of visually impaired individuals, promote universal safety for pedestrians, and encourage the creation of an inclusive and accessible society. He also discussed various government welfare schemes meant for persons with disabilities.
The speakers noted that beyond its practical use, the white cane has become a symbol of independence, safety, and empowerment for the visually impaired community. The program also served as an opportunity to educate the public about the challenges faced by visually impaired persons and to promote inclusivity.
The Principal of Vidyarthi College, who is also a Saksham member, stated that “Service to humanity is service to God,” urging students to nurture a spirit of service from a young age.
World White Cane Day not only celebrates the achievements and contributions of visually impaired people but also promotes accessibility through improved infrastructure, education, and employment opportunities—paving the way for a more inclusive world, said Mrs. Kishori Pattnayak, Women’s Wing Head of Saksham.
Among others present were Saksham member Mrs. Ranjita Sahu and several officials from the One Stop Center (Sakhi).
