Kotpad: In the Kotpad market, Wild Mushroom ‘Bada Chhatu’ are being sold at Rs 3000 per kilogram. Despite the high price, the mushrooms are flying off the shelves with no effect on buyer enthusiasm.
Interestingly, while even a slight rise in the price of basic food items like onions often triggers public discontent, the steep price of mushrooms has sparked no complaints. This clearly reflects the strong demand and growing popularity of big chhatu.
Once a staple food for forest dwellers and tribal communities, this wild mushroom has now become a favorite across all sections of society. What’s more surprising is that this mushroom has found a place on the menus of star hotels in distant cities like Bhubaneswar and Hyderabad, contributing to the skyrocketing prices.
Big chhatu grows naturally in Sal forests. While the common public may not fully recognize its nutritional value, there’s no doubt about its rich taste, making it a highly sought-after delicacy.
