Bhubaneswar: The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has announced that starting April 1, 2025, UPI services will be suspended for mobile numbers that have been inactive for an extended period. This measure aims to prevent fraud and unauthorized transactions associated with recycled or reassigned mobile numbers.

Key Points:

Inactive Numbers: Mobile numbers not used for calls, SMS, or banking services for a significant duration will be deemed inactive. UPI IDs linked to such numbers will be unlinked to mitigate security risks.

Regular Updates: Banks and Payment Service Providers (PSPs) are required to update their records at least weekly using the Mobile Number Revocation List (MNRL) to identify and remove inactive or reassigned numbers.

User Notifications: Before suspending UPI services, banks will notify affected users, allowing them to reactivate or update their mobile numbers to maintain uninterrupted UPI access.

Recommendations for Users:

Ensure Active Status: Keep your mobile number active by regularly using it for calls, messages, or data services.

Update Bank Records: If you’ve changed your mobile number, promptly update your bank and UPI service providers to reflect the new number.

Monitor Communications: Pay attention to any notifications from your bank or UPI apps regarding potential service disruptions and act accordingly.

By proactively managing your mobile number’s status and ensuring your bank records are current, you can avoid disruptions to your UPI services and continue to enjoy seamless digital transactions.
