Umarkote: Over the past 3 years, 5 to 6 Executive Officers have been appointed in the Umarkote Municipality of Nabarangpur district. After the municipal elections, the elected members had promised to transform the town into a clean, pure, and model city of the district. However, to this day, many of Umarkote’s problems remain unresolved!

Repeated meetings have been held with local intellectuals regarding various issues in the town, yet no effective outcomes have emerged. Even today, a meeting was organized with the town’s intellectuals in the presence of the newly appointed Executive Officer, Alok Kumar Anugulia.

The main problems discussed were traffic congestion, sanitation, and malfunctioning CCTV cameras. From 7 AM to 11 AM, old bus stand roads are often blocked by roadside vendors selling vegetables, causing traffic jams. Moreover, some large shop owners have extended their shops by covering the drains in front of them with concrete slabs, further worsening traffic issues.

Traders park large trucks on the streets and conduct loading and unloading activities, obstructing the roads. In most wards of the town, garbage lies scattered on the roads. Forget sprinkling bleaching powder or phenyl in the drains — even basic cleanliness is ignored. A few months ago, CCTV cameras were installed in the town to curb rising crime, but now those cameras are damaged, and crime continues to rise day by day.

Despite repeatedly informing higher authorities about these issues, nothing has improved so far. Earlier, during a public grievance hearing, some journalists had brought up the issue of CCTV cameras before the District Collector. Now, in today’s meeting, the Executive Officer has once again assured the town’s intellectuals that all problems will be resolved within the next seven days.

Now the real question remains: will these promises stay limited to paper, or will they finally translate into action?
