Nabarangpur, 26th Sept 2025: Due to heavy rains caused by a low-pressure system in Umarakot town of Nabarangpur district, several areas are experiencing waterlogging. In some low-lying areas, water has entered homes and shops. In certain deep spots, water has accumulated so much that it has submerged roads halfway, causing severe distress in Umarakot town. The continuous rainfall and inadequate drainage system have created this situation, with some families’ houses flooded or even damaged. Those affected have been relocated to temporary shelters.
Residents blame the municipal administration for their failure to manage the flooding situation effectively.
On the other hand, Lok Anugulia, an official from the Umarakot municipality, stated that drains were cleaned before the monsoon. However, due to the heavy rainfall, such conditions have arisen. Since last night, continuous heavy rain has been recorded, causing water to enter homes particularly in low-lying areas such as Shivaji Nagar, Gulipatna, Adaford Colony, and DNK areas. Some valuable documents and property have been damaged due to water entering homes and shops.
Affected individuals have been shifted to safer places. Residents have also complained that the drains have not been properly cleaned for a long time, and no proper arrangements were made before the monsoon to handle rainwater drainage. As a result, instead of flowing into drains, rainwater is accumulating on roads, damaging roads and causing erosion.
Due to the negligence of the municipal administration, common people are facing great hardship.
This is the second consecutive year such waterlogging has occurred in Umarakot town. Residents hold the weak drainage system responsible and accuse the municipal authorities of failing to clean drains timely. Due to this negligence, flood-like conditions are created during heavy rains.
Residents are demanding that the drainage system in Umarakot be properly maintained immediately.
On the other hand, municipal official Lok Anugulia said that before the monsoon, drains were cleaned and there was no problem with drainage. However, due to heavy rainfall this year, such problems have occurred. This situation is not new for Umarakot town; every year during the monsoon, residents face waterlogging issues due to untimely cleaning of drains and encroachments.
