Bilaspur, 9th Oct 2025: A devastating landslide occurred on Tuesday in the Jhanduta area of Bilaspur district, Himachal Pradesh. A massive portion of a hillside gave way and collapsed directly onto a moving bus, killing 18 people on the spot. Their bodies have been recovered. Several others are still trapped under the debris.
So far, four individuals, including a minor girl, have been rescued alive. The bus was carrying approximately 35 passengers at the time of the incident.
The landslide was triggered by continuous rainfall in the region since Monday. The accident took place around 7:30 PM near the Balu bridge, when a large mass of mud and rocks suddenly fell from a nearby hill, burying the privately operated bus that was en route on the Marotan-Kalaul route.
The bus was moving at a moderate speed when the landslide hit, completely engulfing it. Parts of the vehicle were shattered due to the impact. Rescue teams rushed to the spot and launched an operation using JCB machines to clear the debris. Videos have surfaced showing efforts to remove the heavy mud and rock layers from the buried bus.
The injured were immediately transported by ambulance to the nearest hospital. Some of them are reported to be in critical condition.
District administration and police officials are overseeing the ongoing rescue and recovery operations, which are being jointly carried out by the fire brigade and disaster management authorities.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended condolences to the families of the deceased.
