Bhubaneswar, 15th Nov 2025:  The education system in the state is in complete disarray. Students of Class 5 are unable to recognize letters. The government is responsible for this situation. Schools face a severe shortage of teachers. In many schools, a single teacher is handling the entire school.

Despite this, the state government continues to deploy teachers for various non-teaching activities. The Odisha Parents’ Federation had filed a complaint with the Human Rights Commission regarding this issue. Apart from teaching, school teachers are being assigned to manage the mid-day meal program, distribute books and uniforms, update voter ID cards, conduct various surveys, plant trees, lead awareness rallies, and many other ground-level tasks that have nothing to do with teaching.

As a result, children’s learning is being severely affected. Expressing deep concern over this issue, the Chairperson of the Human Rights Commission, Justice Satrughna Pujahari, has issued a directive stating that these activities assigned by the government cause a major loss of teachers’ time and adversely impact students’ education. Therefore, the Commission has instructed the School & Mass Education Secretary to submit a factual report addressing these problems before the next hearing date.

This directive may set an important precedent to ensure teachers remain focused on teaching activities.
