Jeypore The menace of stray dogs in the city is increasing. No effective measures have been taken for population control. Although plans for sterilization were made, no progress has been achieved. The municipal corporation once administered anti-rabies vaccinations to stray dogs but then fell silent on the matter. Meanwhile, the number of stray dogs is on the rise, causing fear among people while moving around the city. With the onset of the rainy season, the threat of dog attacks is expected to grow further. Citizens are demanding immediate action from the municipality.

The municipality had planned to establish a sterilization center and took steps towards this by proposing a facility near Trilochanchak, at the Kalyan Mandap area. A state-level team visited to inspect whether the location complied with government guidelines. The site was reviewed to check if arrangements met regulatory standards and if any problems could arise. Some unauthorized encroachments were noticed and notices were issued to those involved. Some residents even approached the High Court, which further delayed the establishment of the sterilization center. Consequently, the sterilization program has been stalled.

According to official data, from January to November 2024, no sterilization center was established in the district. The municipal corporation remained silent after administering a one-time anti-rabies vaccination. A letter was sent by the health department to municipal officials, and after receiving directions, the municipality took some action. On April 7 this year, in cooperation with the animal husbandry department staff, 25 stray dogs were vaccinated with anti-rabies shots. However, the municipality has remained largely inactive regarding its responsibility.

Currently, hundreds of stray dogs roam every square corner of the city. People are afraid as dogs sometimes attack them without provocation.
