Bhubaneswar: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has invited suggestions from all national and state-level political parties regarding any unresolved election-related issues at the level of the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO), District Election Officer (DEO), or Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) by April 30, 2024.

On Tuesday, the Commission sent individual letters to eleven political parties, seeking discussions with party presidents and senior members to further strengthen the electoral process in accordance with established laws.

Last week, during a conference, Chief Election Commissioner Jnanesh Kumar directed Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) of all states and Union Territories, District Election Officers (DEOs), and Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) to hold regular consultations with political parties.

Any recommendations received during these meetings will be strictly addressed within the existing legal framework, and a comprehensive action report must be submitted to the Commission by March 31, 2024.

The Commission has also urged political parties to actively utilize decentralized communication channels for effective coordination.

In its official letter, the Commission emphasized that India’s election process is governed by:

The Representation of the People Act, 1950 & 1951

The Voter Registration Rules, 1960

The Election Rules, 1961

Supreme Court judgments

ECI-issued directives and manuals (available on the ECI website)

These regulations have contributed to a transparent, robust, and decentralized legal framework, ensuring free and fair elections across the country.
