Cuttack,12th Aug 2025: While playing, a child had accidentally inhaled a thorn lodged in his windpipe. The child was admitted to Shishu Bhawan due to difficulty in breathing. Using bronchoscopy without any surgical operation, the medical team at Shishu Bhawan achieved a rare success by removing a one-and-a-half-inch-long thorn stuck inside the respiratory tract. The child is now healthy, and there is no risk to his life.
The six-year-old boy, Binu, son of Durga Putti from Giringamali village, Kaliapani police station in Jajpur district, inhaled the thorn on the 23rd while going to school. Initially, the family took him to a government hospital in Sukinda, but his condition did not improve. Later, he was transferred to a private hospital where an X-ray revealed the thorn in the windpipe.
Subsequently, on the 24th, Binu was transferred to Cuttack’s Bada Hospital, but even there, doctors expressed helplessness in removing the thorn from the windpipe. On that day, around noon, Binu was admitted to Shishu Bhawan.
On the 25th, a medical team was formed under the supervision of Shishu Bhawan superintendent Professor Dr. Prabhakar Mishra. The team included Professor Dr. Vijay Kumar Meher, in-charge of Pediatric ICU and Department of Pediatric Medicine at Shishu Bhawan, Assistant Professor Dr. Sarthak Nayak, Assistant Professor Dr. Jyotsna Arpita Sahu from the ENT Department at Cuttack Bada Hospital, and Assistant Professor Dr. Soumyaranjan Sethi from Anesthesia Department.
After nearly an hour of effort through bronchoscopy, the thorn was successfully removed from the windpipe without any surgical operation. The one-and-a-half-inch-long thorn amazed the entire medical team.
Delay in removal could have caused severe damage to the respiratory tract, possibly rupturing the lungs. Now, Binu is healthy and is expected to be discharged from Shishu Bhawan on Wednesday.
