Severe Teacher Shortage in Koraput Schools Sparks Widespread Concern

Koraput, 29th Sept 2025:  The teacher shortage in Koraput has become a matter of serious concern. Despite having strong foundational infrastructure in government, fully-aided, and newly-aided high schools, the lack of teachers is significantly hampering the quality of education. As a result, students are unable to perform well in matriculation (Class 10) examinations.

There are a total of 187 government high schools in the Koraput district, along with 11 fully-aided and 29 newly-aided high schools. In these institutions, 142 headmaster positions are currently vacant.

Subject-wise, the situation is as follows:

  • 23 trained teachers in Arts are vacant,
  • 19 in PCM (Physics, Chemistry, Math),
  • 28 in Hindi,
  • 42 in Sanskrit,
  • 740 positions for Physical Education (Sports) teachers remain unfilled.

In Semiliguda block, at a newly-aided high school, one vacancy each exists in Science, Sports, and Hindi, while two vacancies exist in Arts. Despite this, the school is being managed by only two teachers.

In Jamunda High School in Jayapura block, there are two vacancies in Science and Arts, with only three teachers running the school.

In Borigumma block’s Palli High School, there are three vacancies in Arts, Sanskrit, Sports, and Hindi, but only two teachers are available.

In many high schools, especially remote ones, sometimes only one teacher is handling the entire school.

At Nandapur block’s Bandhugaon area, Alamanda High School lacks a Sanskrit teacher, and Netaji High School in Kularsingh is functioning with minimal staff.

In Patangi block, there is only one Hindi teacher at the local high school. In Sunkiguda block’s Biju High School, there are vacancies in Mathematics and Sports, while there are two vacant positions in Science, Arts, and other subjects.

Similarly, in Koraput block:

  • At Sunapur Shaheed Rajiv Gandhi High School, there’s no Sanskrit teacher.
  • At Chandili High School in Kotpad block, there is no Sports teacher.
  • At Bansuli Panchayat High School, four teachers are missing.
  • In Laxmipur block, Tayaput Netaji High School lacks teachers for Math.
  • In Semiliguda block’s Subai Shaheed Laxman Nayak High School and Renga Rajiv Gandhi High School, there are vacancies in Science and Math.
  • In Kunduli Regional Fully Aided High School, 4 positions are vacant, and in Doliambh PMA School, 5 positions are unfilled.

In Kotpad block:

  • Chasahandi School has one vacancy,
  • JALC School has four vacancies,
  • Dengapadar Gram Panchayat School has four,
  • In Kundura block:
  • Lachhanaguda School has five vacant positions,
  • Dangarpoushi Ananta Vidyapeetha has four,
  • Jayapura City School has four,
  • JALC School has four, and
  • Koraput Police School has five.

Several fully-aided schools are functioning without five essential teachers.

Hundreds of teaching positions, including JALC (Junior Assistant Lecturer Cadre), have been lying vacant for years. Letters have already been sent to the government demanding the filling of these vacancies.

Until these positions are filled, alternative arrangements are being considered, said District Education Officer Prashant Kumar Mahanti.
