School and College Teachers’ and Employees’ Agitation Withdrawn

Bhubaneswar, Dec, 27:  School and college teachers and employees, who had been staging a day-and-night sit-in protest for two days at Gandhi Marg demanding grants for grant-eligible schools and colleges and pension benefits for retired and retiring teachers and staff, have withdrawn their agitation.

The Odisha School and College Teachers and Employees Coordination Committee (OSCTECC) stated that the protest was withdrawn after discussions with departmental ministers and MLAs, and following assurances given by them.

The organization’s key demands include: providing post-retirement benefits to employees who have retired since 2004; issuing service rules; increasing the retirement age from 60 to 62 years; scrapping the New Pension Scheme and restoring the Old Pension Scheme; granting six notional increments to contractual teachers appointed up to 2013; and extending to students studying in private schools and colleges the same facilities and benefits that are available in government schools.
