Sambalpur: The Sambalpur Municipal Corporation has launched a sterilization campaign to control the dog population. With just a few weeks remaining in the current year, 1,280 dogs have already undergone sterilization through surgical procedures.
At a dedicated facility in Burla, municipal staff capture stray dogs and perform sterilization surgeries to control their population. After the procedure, these dogs are provided with necessary post-operative care and then released back to their original locations, stated Municipal Commissioner Vedabhushan.
Since 2014-15, a total of 3,847 dogs have been sterilized. Among them, 2,115 were female (spayed), and 1,759 were male (neutered). In previous years, the sterilization numbers were as follows:
2014-15: 40 dogs
2016-17: 414 dogs
2017-18: 469 dogs
2019-20: 3,588 dogs
Last year: 193 dogs
The campaign follows scientific procedures, and public cooperation is essential for its success. The Municipal Commissioner stated that approximately 1,000 dogs will be sterilized annually under this initiative.
