New Delhi: Russia is commemorating the 80th anniversary of its victory in World War II. Ahead of the official celebrations, a special event was held today at the Russian Embassy’s ‘Russia House’ in New Delhi, where a commemorative plaque was unveiled in honor of legendary leader and former Odisha Chief Minister Biju Patnaik. The plaque was unveiled by Russian Ambassador Denis Alipov in recognition of Biju Patnaik’s contributions.
At the event, former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, who attended as the chief guest, stated that the entire nation is proud of Biju Babu’s bravery and valor. He recalled how, during World War II, Biju Patnaik displayed extraordinary courage as a pilot. He flew through enemy territory to deliver arms and supplies to the encircled Russian forces in Stalingrad, contributing significantly to Russia’s victory against Nazi forces—an act that remains unparalleled.
Russian Ambassador Denis Alipov, in his address, described Biju Patnaik as a distinguished personality, a beloved son of India, and a fearless pilot who contributed immensely to India’s national aviation history.
In 1943, Biju Patnaik played a key role in supplying arms to the besieged Red Army, marking a vital chapter in Russia’s war efforts. In recognition of his bravery, Russia had earlier honored him in 1995 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Allied victory in World War II.
Notably, the commemorative plaque includes Biju Patnaik’s name alongside other Indian heroes who contributed to the Allied efforts during World War II. On May 9, as part of the official Victory Day celebration, the Russian government will posthumously award Biju Patnaik for his heroic contributions. The award will be accepted by former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.
The plaque unveiling event at the Russian Embassy was attended by senior diplomats and many distinguished guests.
