Bhubaneswar,4th Sept 2025: Now, an electricity consumer in Odisha can install a 1-kilowatt rooftop solar system by paying just Rs 5,000. Although the actual cost of a 1 kW solar system is around Rs 60,000, both the central and state governments are jointly offering a subsidy of Rs 55,000, enabling the consumer to avail the system at a nominal cost.
At a press conference, Gajanan Kale, CEO of TPNODL (TP Northern Odisha Distribution Ltd.) and head of Tata Power Distribution Business, stated that a 1 kW rooftop solar setup can generate up to 100 units of electricity per month. This could lead to an annual saving of approximately Rs 10,000 in electricity bills. The installation will reduce monthly electricity expenses and also contribute to Odisha’s renewable energy goals, he added.
Consumers do not need to pay any application fee (which is usually around Rs 500). The company will provide a 5-year warranty on the system equipment and a 25-year warranty on the solar panels. The entire process from installation to operation will be taken care of.

The system is being implemented under the Utility-led Aggregation (ULA) model, which makes it affordable for residential consumers by aggregating demand and streamlining procurement.
This initiative is especially beneficial for middle-class and low-income households, as it enables access to clean and affordable energy.
Though the typical cost for a 1 kW rooftop solar system ranges from Rs 65,000 to Rs 75,000, under the ULA model, customers only need to make a one-time payment of Rs 5000. The remaining cost will be covered through government subsidies, facilitated by Tata Power-led DISCOMs.
At the press meet, senior officials from Tata Power, including Anurag Singh, Prabhan Verma, and Armit Garg, were also present.
