Rising Student Suicides at IIT Kharagpur Claim Six Lives This Year

New Delhi,23rd Sept 2025:  Student suicides at IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) Kharagpur have been on the rise. On Saturday, the body of another student was recovered from an IIT Kharagpur hostel. The student was found hanging in his room, apparently having committed suicide. According to police sources, the deceased has been identified as 27-year-old Harsh Kumar Pandey from Jharkhand. The police have started an investigation.

On Saturday afternoon, around 2 PM, the body of the student was found hanging in the B.R. Ambedkar Hall of IIT Kharagpur. The Hisli Police Station, under the jurisdiction of Kharagpur Town Police, recovered the body. Harsh’s father, Manoj Kumar Pandey, was unable to contact his son by phone in the afternoon and subsequently contacted the IIT authorities. Upon investigation, security personnel found Harsh’s room locked. Officials then informed the Hisli Police, who recovered the body around 2 PM.

The police sent the body to BC Roy Hospital in IIT Kharagpur. So far this year, six students have died by suicide. Including this recent case, the number of such deaths at IIT Kharagpur has risen to six this year. Among these, five students were found hanging. Previously, on the night of July 21, the body of Chandradeep Pawar, a second-year electrical engineering student from Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh, was also found.
