Nabarangpur, Feb, 10: Gopasundar Bishoyi, a well-known personality of the district, passed away today at 11:40 a.m. at SUM Hospital in Bhubaneswar. The news of his demise has deeply saddened many organizations and individuals, who have extended their condolences to the bereaved family.

He had been undergoing treatment in the ICU at SUM Hospital for a prolonged illness and breathed his last after a long struggle.

As early as the 1980s, Bishoyi had founded the weekly newspaper “Upakar” as a medium to convey information from the administration and government and to promote development and awareness in the then underdeveloped and remote district. He also served as its editor. Prior to this, he had worked with Lakshmi Chandra Das’s publication Janasakha before establishing his own newspaper.

Apart from journalism, he was a researcher, writer, poet, and politician. He also assisted in editing various magazines and publications. Until his final days, he remained actively involved in social activities, expressing keen interest in participating in programs and sharing his views. As an experienced and respected figure, people from different fields regularly sought his advice.

He is survived by his son, four daughters-in-law, sons-in-law, and grandchildren. His wife is a State Governor Award-winning teacher, as well as a noted speaker and writer. Inspired by him, his younger daughter, Prabhati Bishoyi, is working with Doordarshan and All India Radio.

Members of the intellectual community have expressed that his experience and guidance are an irreparable loss to Nabarangpur.
