Remembering Gyan Chandra Ghosh: Honoring the Legacy on His Death Anniversary

Kotpad 21st January 2025 Sir Gyan Chandra Ghosh was an Indian chemist known for his contributions to scientific research, industrial development, and the advancement of technological education in India. In 1950, he served as the director of the newly established Eastern Higher Technical Institute, which was renamed IIT Kharagpur in 1951. He was also the director of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, and the vice-chancellor of the University of Calcutta.

He is recognized for his work on the anomalies of strong electrolytes and the development of the dissociation-ionization theory.
Among his other notable contributions were his extensive studies on photocatalysts under the effect of polarized light and the development of the Fischer-Tropsch reaction for hydrocarbon synthesis.

He participated in all stages of preparing India’s Second Five-Year Plan and played a significant role in drafting proposals to expand facilities for technical education at various levels. He passed away on January 21, 1959, while actively serving his duties.
