Cuttack, 19th Sept 2025: Drivers using mobile phones to make reels or video calls while driving will face cancellation of their vehicle registration (RC) and driving license. It has been observed that many drivers dangerously engage in recording reels or videos on their mobile phones while driving.
Such behavior not only endangers the driver but also poses serious risks to other road users. To control such violations, the Commerce and Transport Department has decided to monitor these incidents not only on roads but also through social media platforms.
In a recent incident at Bariniput on the National Highway, a goods-carrying truck lost balance and crashed into a roadside shop, resulting in the death of a woman. Action has been taken under the Motor Vehicles Act and the Indian Penal Code. The vehicle was seized, and the driver was detained by the police.
Strict action is being taken against dangerous driving. The Transport Department has seized vehicles at various locations and warned of stringent measures against such violations. In some places, vehicles have already been seized for violating road safety rules by making reels or videos while driving. Along with fines, driving licenses and registration certificates will be suspended.
Videos of young drivers recklessly making reels or videos while driving have been regularly surfacing on social media, often leading to accidents. To ensure public safety, Commerce and Transport Minister Bibhuti Bhusan Jena has directed strict action against reckless drivers. Under the supervision of divisional head and Transport Commissioner Amitabh Thakur, steps have been taken to control such drivers.
All RTOs in the state have been instructed accordingly. In a recent case near Jaypur, Koraput district, and at a school road in Haldia, Khordha district, a driver was seen making reels while driving a four-wheeler without holding the steering wheel. The video went viral on social media.
The Khordha Additional Regional Transport Officer, with the help of local police and RTOs from Jagatsinghpur and Bhubaneswar-1, seized the vehicle. Similarly, a video of reckless driving by a young couple on a bike in Bhubaneswar went viral a few days ago. In this case, Bhubaneswar-2 RTO detained the vehicle and took measures like fines and license suspension.
In Puri, vehicles involved in such dangerous driving have been seized and fined accordingly.
