Bhubaneswar, Nov 22 : A cyclonic circulation has formed near the Strait of Malacca, close to Malaysia. On the 22nd, a low-pressure area developed, which may intensify into a depression by the 24th. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the situation is currently under observation.
Whether it will develop into a cyclone or not, and where it may make landfall, is still unclear. However, based on surrounding conditions and the factors of the sea, most experts feel the system is favorable for cyclone formation. The exact probable path is still uncertain, so a precise forecast cannot yet be made.
According to IMD’s extended forecast, rainfall is likely along the Odisha coast from the 27th. Light to moderate rainfall is expected in some areas, while heavy to very heavy rainfall may occur in certain places.
Even if a cyclone does not form, the rains could bring trouble for farmers in Odisha. If such rain occurs during the winter season, paddy cultivation would be the most affected. Most districts are currently in the harvesting stage, with paddy almost ripe. In some areas, harvesting may continue into the second week of December.
Rains or strong winds at this stage could damage not only paddy but also crops like sugarcane, potato, groundnut, cabbage, and other vegetables.
Agriculture and meteorology expert Debashish Jena said that since paddy is currently in the ripening stage across Odisha, any rainfall at this time could adversely affect the crop.
